A “nose job” or rhinoplasty procedure is one of the oldest cosmetic surgeries. This basic operation was developed over 120 years ago and has since been refined to offer natural results while minimizing recovery time. Dr. Bailey likes to avoid an operated look such as a raised, pointed tip or “ski-jump” profile. Instead, he brings natural symmetry and balance to the features, creating a harmonious result you will love.

Nose surgery can be done at any age after skeletal maturity (15-17 years old). There is no upper age limit – apart from your general health. Your results, however, depend on how your skin shrinks to fit the re-shaped foundation of bone and cartilage. Lifting the tip of the nose, and reducing the overall size, will often help you look younger. (The nose does not grow as we age, but as other features shrink, it starts to look larger.)

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Most patients choose a general anesthetic (they go to sleep), though minor adjustments can be performed under local anesthesia. Usually, rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day after the operation. Breathing problems such as a deviated septum can be corrected at the same time.

During the procedure, incisions are made inside each nostril. Often, these are joined with a small incision between the nostrils. This allows Dr. Bailey to lift the skin and simultaneously see both sides of the nose. This is called an “open rhinoplasty” and is especially helpful if the nose is not symmetrical or the bad results of previous nose surgery are being corrected. Sometimes, other carefully placed external incisions are needed for certain problems like excessively large nostrils.

Treatment Outcome

After the operation, a plastic splint will be taped over the outside of the nose for a week. You might have some soft rubber drains or splints inside the nostrils if a blocked airway was corrected. Some bruising around the eyes can be expected and may last two weeks or so. Swelling of the nose will also last about the same length, and some mild swelling may persist for several months after rhinoplasty. It may take up to one year for the tip to shrink to its new size. The areas of the nose operated on are often numb for several months following surgery. For this reason, you should protect your nose from extreme cold or sunburn.

While the operation takes six months to one year to achieve the permanent result, your “new” nose is visible immediately. However, you may be surprised how few people will notice. A good rhinoplasty will create a nose in harmony with the other features of the face. Your nose will no longer catch the eye. Instead, friends may remark on how well you look or say “have you had your hair done differently?” For most patients, though, the greatest satisfaction is their new appearance in the mirror.
