Breast Augmentation Candidates

If your breasts are significantly smaller than you would like them to be and not unduly droopy, you are likely a good candidate for this procedure. If the breasts are also quite droopy, you can still have a breast augmentation, but a mastopexy (breast lift) may also need to be performed during the same procedure.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Procedure

The augmentation procedure can be performed in several ways. If the implants are to be inserted beneath the muscle, a general anesthetic is usually used. Breast augmentation can also be performed under local anesthesia (injections to freeze the tissues) and sedation, but this is rarely done. Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure.

During the operation, the breast implants are inserted through either an incision around the lower border of the nipple (at the edge of the areola or pigmented area), an incision in the skin fold below the breast, or an incision in the armpit. (A small minority of surgeons use the umbilicus or belly button, but implant manufacturers are concerned about damage to the implant with this technique.) The choice of incision and breast size is largely a matter of preference.

There are a wide variety of implant choices – implant size, saline or silicone-filled, round or shaped implants, thicker (“gummy implants”), or thinner gel. Dr. Bailey will help you make those choices based on his examination of your breasts and your goals

Dr. Bailey also uses On-Q™ catheters on each side of the breast. These are very small tubes, about the size of an I.V. catheter, but longer, that pass a steady flow of local anesthetic into the area of surgery for the first 3-4 days. They significantly reduce the pain and the number of painkillers you need.

Treatment Outcome

Some discomfort can be expected after surgery. If the implant has been put beneath the muscles, the pain is more severe, and pain may occur upon moving the arms. Typically there is not a great deal of bruising or swelling. You should be able to return to work in 2-3 days if the implants are above the muscle or 7-10 days if they are below. However, you must avoid strenuous activity for 2-6 weeks.
