Why Does a Weak Jawline Develop?

A weak jawline and chin are often hereditary. These issues can be familial traits that can worsen with age. Starting from age 30, declines in collagen and elastin occur within the dermal layer of the skin, causing the skin to sag. The muscles and connective tissues also loosen. These changes can make the problem even worse, along with making you look substantially older.

Complications of Having a Weak Chin and Jawline

Having a weak chin or weak jawline doesn’t necessarily indicate a medical concern. However, in severe cases, a receding or a weak chin can be associated with orthodontic problems so severe that instead of advancing the chin, the whole jaw has to be moved forwards or re-aligned.

Surgery For a Weak Chin and Jawline

A chin reshaping or advancement surgery is usually performed through an incision on the inside of the lower lip. It can be performed either under local or general anesthesia. You will be able to go home the same day after this procedure. However, it will take some time for the area to heal completely after surgery.

Chin implant surgery is more often done through an incision under the chin because of concerns about infection when an incision in the mouth is used to insert a large piece of foreign material. The surgery is, however shorter and simpler.

Though he does  both surgeries, Dr. Bailey prefers chin advancement for most patients for several reasons:

• It also tightens the muscles under the chin, improving the contour.
• Chin implants often erode the bone of the chin over time.
• Chin implants can become infected many years later.
