How Do Freckles Occur?
Harmless melanin overproduction is the cause of freckles. Melanin is a substance responsible for skin and hair color (pigmentation). When your skin is overexposed to the sun, brown spots and hyperpigmentation soon follow. In some cases, that exposure causes small dots to form on the skin instead. Some people may have pale, freckled skin, while others may have darker-looking dots. The likelihood of getting these odd little dots is attributed to both the natural environment and genetic predisposition.
