How Does a Crooked Nose Develop?

Some people are unfortunate enough to be born with a deviated septum. This can occur during fetal development or due to injury during childbirth. After birth, a deviated septum is most commonly caused by an injury that moves your nasal septum out of place. Sometimes the nasal bones are fractured too and displaced. Risk factors for this issue include playing contact sports, getting into a car accident, failed surgery, or other trauma to your nose.

What Are the Signs?

The visual signs of a crooked nose are quite straightforward. If the nose appears asymmetrical or has visible bumps, it may require correcting for aesthetic reasons. A deviated septum may also occur but not be visible. In that case, the most common sign is breathing difficulty that ranges in severity. If you struggle to breathe from one nostril, a crooked septum is likely and corrective surgery may be the best option to feel comfortable again.

Rhinoplasty for a Crooked Nose

A rhinoplasty procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia (with you asleep). During the operation, incisions are made inside each nostril. Often, these are joined with a small incision between the nostrils. This allows Dr. Bailey to lift the skin and see both sides of the nose simultaneously and to see the entire septum clearly.

This is called an “open rhinoplasty.” A septoplasty can be performed through the same incisions to provide you with both a beautiful and comfortable result. If the turbinates (folds of the nasal lining) are blocking airflow, they can be reduced too. Sometimes, other carefully placed external incisions are needed for certain problems like excessively large nostrils.  This is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day after the operation.
